The bug planted in Jimmy’s apartment was not the only listening device involved. It seemed that Glenn Tibbits had taken an interest in technology as well. Only he didn’t need a bug or a Luke. He just needed to be standing close to Chase. As a matter of fact, he was in the same room with Chase running the digital recorder. Little did either of them know the powder keg that Jimmy was sitting on.

But they were about to find out!

Chapter 14

Sunday dinner at the Parsonage

“Man, am I hungry. I can’t wait for some home-cooked food. Does your mom do all the cooking around your house?” Chase asked Megan as she drove her black SUV back from the Sunday morning church service.

Before she could answer, Chase looked around the vehicle and said, “I seem to remember seeing this SUV a few months ago.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah, whoever was driving it nearly ran me over as I was crossing the street.”

“It was probably my dad,” she said coyly.

“Yeah, right,” Chase dropped the subject not wanting to cause hard feelings right before he had his first home- cooked meal in … longer than he could remember.

“Getting back to your first question, Mom doesn’t do any of the cooking around our house. We have a cook who does all that. Actually, she’s a nutritionist; everything she makes is good for you.”

“I sure hope I like it.”

“Oh, you will. I hope you don’t mind sitting in the guest dining room. We have other guests coming for dinner besides you.”

“Oh, who are they?”

“I don’t know, just a bunch of very important people. Some wearing turbans, some wearing suits, some wearing a burqa, the traditional head coverings. Fortunately, Mom speaks three languages and she can interpret if you want to say ‘hi’ to anyone.”

“I probably won’t be saying ‘hi’ to anybody besides your dad. By the way, do I call him Pastor, Reverend, Father, what?”

“I don’t know, just call him T.J. That’s what he prefers.”

“Somehow I don’t think that all those mockery-mucks will be calling him T.J.”

Megan parked her SUV, and they got out and started walking up the flagstone walkway leading to the house. Actually, it wasn’t a house as one might have imagined. This was a cross between a mansion and a conference center. It could have been a second White House.

“Look at the size of this place. Do you actually live here?”

“Yes, silly, we’ve always lived in nice homes.” “This ain’t no home that I’ve ever seen.”

“It’s just ‘home sweet home’ to me. Come in, and I’ll show you around before all the other guests arrive.”

They toured the palatial home with Megan pointing out some of the more outstanding artwork and sculptures.

Some were rather embarrassing to look at in mixed company, so Chase moved ahead quickly. Megan, acting as a tour guide, showed Chase the fitness center and spa, the game room, the entertainment room, complete with theater seating and surround sound, and the library. These rooms occupied the lower level and were accessed by an elevator.
